Hey there - I’m still on a long break, working on some year end projects. I’ll be back soon with more news on that.

⚽️ Right now, the World Cup is happening in Qatar. I thought it would be good to share this video and this video on the situation - how Qatar unfairly got the World Cup, and how they have and are exploiting workers to build this World Cup Infrastructure. Johnny Harris is done some amazing work on these topics.

The TikTok US Congress hearing happened earlier today. It was hostile, and over the five hours, US Congress members grilled Singaporean CEO Shou Zi Chew.

If things don't go well, TikTok could risk getting banned from the Untied States. Here are some pointers I pulled out from the hearing that you might wanna know too.
Chew didn't seem to convince the US lawmakers.
While the lawmakers were extremely hostile and even prevented him from speaking to him at some moments, his reasonings on data security didn't seem to be convincing to lawmakers. He did a very credible job otherwise, as noted by multiple media outlets.

The lawmakers might not know what they're talking about.
During the hearing, livestreams on the app called lawmakers "boomers", "embarrassing" and "out of touch". And you can't defend that when you see the questions they asked either.
Georgia representative Earl Cater asked how the app determines the age of a user, insinuating that it must be from biometric data. Chew explained that users provide their age when they sign up for an account. North Carolina representative Richard Hudson asked Chew if TikTok can "access the home Wi-Fi network". I don't think he understands how the internet works.
There were a few irregularities in the lawmakers accusations as noted by the Washington Post here.

There were lots of tense exchanges.
There were so many tense exchanges. There were many other times when he was cut off by lawmakers. Many commenters on videos on the internet noted that the lawmakers "were not listening at all". When Rep. August Pfluger asked Chew if there are any Chinese engineers working on Tiktok Chew did agree, but pointed out that many other companies have the same practice. He was promptly cut off and was told to rename his project. "Texas is not the appropriate name.”

The lawmakers didn’t really let him talk.
He was rarely allowed to elaborate, and was often talked over or dismissed when he did. “You have not given straightforward answers. We do not find you credible on these things,” said Republican Neal Dunn of Florida, who said TikTok would censor content on behalf of the Communist Party of China. Mr Chew replied: “Congressman, you have given me no time to answer your questions. I reject the characterisations.”

There wasn't any real evidence about the national security threats provided.
U.S. officials have offered no evidence that TikTok has forked over U.S. data to China, but lawmakers have cited concerns that the company could be compelled to do so because its parent company, ByteDance, is based in Beijing.

Chew avoided some points posed by lawmakers.
When asked several times if TikTok sells its data, Chew seemed to dodge the question. In one instance, he said the app doesn’t sell data to anyone. When responding to another question, he said “I believe we don’t sell data to data brokers.” He also dodged a question about the Chinese government persecuting the Uyghur population - simply making a point that it was "deeply concerning" Democratic lawmaker Tony Cardenas noted that he was a "good dancer with words".

At least, one thing that he did achieve was to unite Republicans and Democrats - for at least a day.
