On Wednesday evening I witnessed the agony of a crime victim. A Hyundai i20 was highjacked at gun point in Estherpark. An alarm was raised and the Tracking Company spotted the car driving towards Terenure. A private security car responded swiftly and upon identifying the car, he gave chase. The car then overturned at the corner of Rienet and P91 in Sector 3 Policing Precinct. The one suspect tried to escape and was apprehended by the Community of Terenure whilst the driver was arrested by the security personel.
Within minutes, the victim arrived on the scene and only to find her car on its roof. I don’t know what was going on in her mind. She was told to go to the police station to open a case by the policeman who secured the crime scene. All of us at the scene focused on the two suspects and we did not care about the victim. I will not forget the look on her face when she came face to face with her highjackers.
All of us failed this lady. Yes, the perpetrators were arrested and we think justice was served. What about this lady who is going to live with this ordeal for the rest of her life. Looking at a gun pointed at you and having your car taken away from you. Within minutes, being told that the perpetrators have been arrested. Upon arrival at the scene, finding her car on its roof.
I really don’t know what she was thinking at the time. Upon successful prosecution of these two guys, they will be sent to a prison for a couple of years. Upon admittance at the center, they will have access to a Social worker, a Psychologist, a doctor 24/7. What about the victim? She is left alone with the wounds that may not heal. These guys are going to be prescribed programs like Sycamore Tree (Restorative Justice) whilst she has to find her own Psychologist and Social worker at her own cost.
Well, what is the Church of Christ doing? I am in the process of tracing this lady and ensure that she gets help. In the Church we have Psychologists and Social workers. I need those services to be afforded the lady. I want this lady to get justice that restores. The insurance will replace the car but what about her soul. She needs counselling as soon as possible. Come on Church of Christ, lets assist the victims of crime no matter who they are.
