Cassettes

I wrote that 90s are back. I started to dig.

19 January 2020 Forbes writes that audio cassettes are hot shit now.
9 November 2019 The Guardian covered the resurgence of cassette tapes.

Benefits: uniqueness, portability, tactile sensation, good audio quality, can be produced in smaller production runs than vinyl with a good price.

With a funky colourful cassette, nice cover print, transparent box and with a delivery one production unit costs 2 € + approx 2 € audio = 4 €. You can sell them for 25€-30€ as limited editions. Or you can just buy blank tapes, record and customise them at home.

Hipsters being early adopters dig tapes, so it's possible that with 90s aesthetics the tape love will become mainstream.

Stickers and GIFs

Another way to promote a band is to create stickers and gifs, especially to make them searchable on Instagram. It’s a pain in the neck to do, but once it out there, it is mega dope.

Example: search for 3teeth stickers when you create an Instagram Story.

To make them searchable you need to:
1. Create an account on giphy.com
2. Upload 5 gifs that are relevant to your brand/band
3. Get verified (takes a week)

I gonna do it myself and will tell you once it’s done.

Docs

Biebs launched his documentary series “Seasons” on YouTube Originals.
There’s a new Taylor Swift’s documentary film on Netflix “Miss Americana”.
Beyonce had one last year “Homecoming” also on Netflix.

The list goes on. Most of such docs are part of a promo campaign for that artist.

But you don’t need to wait. I would suggest bands to start making some sort of a vlog. For example, documenting the creation of the new album with all the troubles that a band goes through. People love such stuff.

Yes, it takes a lot of energy, effort and time. In the beginning, it is tough, but later it becomes automatic. And it solves the problem of content creation for a band and gathers your audience before you released anything.

Vlogging

If you decide to go the vlog way - which I think is a good promo way - remember that you don’t have to constantly post only your original content. You can have a nice mix:: covers, song break down, comments, tips, live streams etc.

Btw, you can monetise those vids. Later I gonna calculate how much money you can make with YouTube vs Spotify.

A nice example is Nik Nocturnal (200k subs):

People love contests and giveaways. We know that.

I found Gleam , a service that kinda helps with organising a giveaway. Basically, do (something) to get a chance of winning free stuff. Emails and follows etc.

I checked it out, gives good follow options for a small amount.
Might be good as part of a promo campaign.

Yes, I know that you know. But if you don’t want to be in front of the camera for the YouTube series, you can use that high-quality audio gear that you have and still do a series, but just audio... and video and upload to YouTube.

Same principles apply.

It’s not easy, but I’m sure that your colleagues are not doing that so you have a head start.

The new theme song for James Bond just came out. Nothing against it.
007 is a pop franchise and a theme song is usually sung by a pop star.

But my version of James Bond would be far cooler if Mark Lanegan performed this song.

How we can use this?

Classic.

We can use such events to get promotion.

If we know that something epic like 007 is coming out soonish, we could prepare a cover on one of the theme songs and upload it to YouTube at the right time. We know that studios will start pushing the film, so there are higher chances to be picked up by algorithms and public.

Same with other events.

Promo idea for facebook.

Sometimes when you browse fb, you see some people have some light sabres or whatever on their profile pic.

Turns out, you can make you own and upload it to fb for everyone to use. It's called A Frame and you can make it in a Frame Studio (link below).

So if you have a gig coming up, you can tell people to put a badge on your fb profile pic and it can be temporary (there's an option).

I'll make my own a bit later, when I decide on the design and let you know.

Exposure! We need exposure! More people should know! oki oki!

People like moving pictures. FB knows this and pushes videos everywhere. Videos get twice more engagement on Instagram than other types of posts. You probably noticed this yourself when you see the analytics.

For sure I see it with my posts. All my motion/animation clips have more views, likes etc. Even a simple animated logo that zooms in or out has more likes than my complex hand-drawn illustration.
