🌐 World Economy Looks to Dodge Stagflation Rut as Outlook Perks Up

Bloomberg reports OECD lifts 2024 global growth forecast to 3.1% from 2.9% and inflation easing faster than expected, except in US.

🪧 The world’s economic outlook is perking up as growth proves more resilient and inflation is set to cool faster than previously expected in many countries, the OECD said.

The OECD raised the 2024 global growth forecast to 3.1% — from 2.9% in February — with notable improvements in its expectations for the US, China and India. The expansion should continue at 3.2% next year.

📌 Inflation will be softer than the OECD forecast three months ago, with the exception of the US, where it now expects prices to rise 2.5% this year instead of 2.2%. Still, it said US policy makers should be able to reduce interest rates in the second half of the year.

🍫‘Unethical’ Junk Food Packaging Manipulates Children Into Craving Sweets

The Guardian reports that food companies are using bright colours and cartoon characters in an “unethical” effort to manipulate children into wanting the sweets and crisps they make.

📊Bite Back, a campaign group that is part of the chef Jamie Oliver’s empire, asked nutrition experts to analyse 262 sweet food products sold in the UK with packaging likely to appeal to children made by the 10 biggest food companies.

📝The survey found that all 58 child-appealing products made by Mondelēz International – which owns the Cadbury, Oreo, Milka and Dairylea brands – were unhealthy. All 22 made by Ferrero contained large amounts of fat, salt or sugar too.

💬Mondelēz rejected the findings and said it was a “responsible food producer” which abided by the UK’s marketing codes. Its products “are marketed at adults and parents and intended as an occasional treat”, it added.

Worsening Weather Is Igniting a $25 Billion Market

Bloomberg reports as companies and investors come to grips with meteorological risks, they’re looking to a niche corner of Wall Street for protection.

📊 Against a backdrop of rising climate volatility and social shifts, demand for weather derivatives is surging. Average trading volumes for listed products jumped more than 260% in 2023, according to the CME Group, with the number of outstanding contracts currently 48% higher than a year ago.

📊 In many jurisdictions, regulators are beginning to compel companies to quantify just how much of a threat the weather is to their business. Most large and listed European companies are now required to disclose what they see as risks and opportunities from environmental factors.

☁️Historically weather derivatives have mostly been used to cushion energy companies from fluctuations in demand caused by shifting temperatures. Power suppliers face clear and predictable risks: If a summer is cooler than expected, people won’t use air conditioners as much, and in a mild winter, heating demand might wane.

✔️ Assistants to the khokims are among people ("Istiqlol" makhalla)

📍The "Economic Review" Journal continues to cover issues related to the introduction of the new "makhallabay" system.

📌 Khayrullokhon Khikmatov, assistant to the khokim in "Istiqlol" makhalla in Turakurgan district of Namangan region, regarding the situation with the introduction of the "makhallabay" system in an interview to "ER".

✂️The editorial provides excerpts from the interview:

It is necessary to study the interests, preferences and needs of the population, lifestyle and contribute to solving their problems as soon as possible.

A separate individual program has been developed for low-income and families in need of social protection, and measures are being taken to eliminate the problems of each family member who has a problem.

I try to conduct all business with the principles of transparency and accountability in accordance with the initiative of the "seven" makhalla. I regularly provide reports on the work done to the Council.

In my opinion, the residents' trust in the makhalla institute has increased significantly. Regardless of who the citizens turn to, they are confident that their problems will be solved within the framework of the makhalla. To be honest, the residents of the makhalla call me khokim, which indicates confidence in the institution of the "assistant to the khokim".

🇸🇦Saudi Arabia’s $100 Billion AI Fund Will Divest China If US Asks

Bloomberg reports that the $100 billion Saudi investment fund says US is top partner, for now.

📑 The head of Saudi Arabia’s new investment fund for semiconductor and artificial intelligence technology said the country would divest from China if it were asked to do so by the US.

↔️ US officials have told their Saudi Arabian counterparts that they need to choose between Chinese and American technology as they aim to build out the Saudi Arabian semiconductor industry.

🗓 US increasingly scrutinizes the Middle East’s ties to China, over worries that countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates could serve as conduits for Beijing to access technology that Chinese firms are blocked from buying from the US.

🇺🇸 Americans Are Racking Up ‘Phantom Debt’ That Wall Street Can’t Track

Bloomberg reports that consumers have embraced ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ (BNPL) products that allow them to pay for purchases in installments, but it’s not clear how many of these loans are out there.

💵 The major companies that provide these so called “pay in four” products don’t report those loans to credit agencies. They’ve resisted calls for greater disclosure, even as the market has grown each year since at least 2020 and is projected to reach almost $700 billion globally by 2028.

🧱 That’s masking a complete picture of the financial health of American households, which is crucial for everyone from global central banks to US regional lenders and multinational businesses.

🏠 About 42% of those with household income of more than $100,000 report being behind or delinquent on BNPL payments.

🎲 Robust consumer spending and low unemployment rates have many economists convinced the US consumer remains strong, making Wall Street bullish on the economy. But lately, stubbornly persistent inflation has dialed back expectations for imminent interest-rate relief.

📊 Einhorn Says Markets Are ‘Broken.’ Here’s What Data Shows

Bloomberg reports that rise of index-tracking money seen driving value-investing woes. Yet valuation and return data are in line with historic norms.

🔄 In the telling of the renowned hedge-fund manager, the explosion in index-tracking flows is putting so many active investors out of business that the halcyon era of Warren Buffett and Benjamin Graham championing undervalued companies is no more.

📊 An index of value stocks, those ranked low in metrics such as price to earnings or book value, has trailed the Russell 1000 benchmark in all but two years since 2012. Against shares boasting faster growth, value earlier this year sank to a record, thanks to the profit boom unleashed by the artificial-intelligence fervor.

📊 To the likes of Einhorn, the hidden hand of passive money is behind a large part of this. Since new money is going to index-tracking vehicles, cash automatically goes after winning stocks.

🔍 Why Are Americans So Angry While the Chinese Are Calm?

Bloomberg reports that it’s simple. Cost of living matters.

🔝 China’s economy is struggling. The property market is in its third year of downturn. Youth unemployment is at 15%. Consumer confidence in their future income is at two-decade low.

🔝 Population probably quite gloomy, as evidenced by record-high savings and the central bank’s quarterly consumer confidence survey.

🔝 On average, households nowadays pay 3.7% on their mortgages, down from 5.6% in 2021: Banks have been slashing borrowing costs, worried that homeowners would otherwise turn over the keys and default.
