Spotify Canvas

"Canvas is an 8-second visual loop that can be added to any of your tracks to appear in the Now Playing View."

u need to play the songs on your phone and the animation will start.

With a power of AI sorting I've compiled a melancholic playlist on Spotify. The AI took the most chilled songs out of playlist "my 700+ top songs".

Click the button below to hear the playlist.
Spotify Playlists

Playlist curation is a separate business.

The usual suspects: pushers, tricksters, hustlers, behemoths (like Spotify) etc.

It is highly advised for musicians to submit their music to all these playlists and especially to Spotify Curated Playlist, cos there is a chance that thousands of people will discover them.

I have to know how this crap works, so I’ve created a thematic playlist with the music I dig.

I’ll be updating it gradually. The replaced songs will go into a separate playlist (I will post the link later).

Songs for Spotify

Regarding a song structure that people discuss in other publications and noticed myself when I compile my playlist.

I need energetic rock songs, so I listen to the first 5-10 sec of the song. It’s enough to feel the mood, get the tempo and hear the overall quality. I put the potential songs in a separate hidden folder and from there I choose the ones that will go into the playlist.

What I read about a “successful” song structure for Spotify is in a way true.

1. Shorter songs get more replays.
2. No slow intros. Start big immediately or under 30 sec.
3. The album cover/art gives a second impression after hearing the song. It should look dope and designed for a small thumbnail on Spotify.
4. I noticed that my eyes naturally go: name of the band => photo of the band => monthly listeners => top 5 songs and how many plays are there => album art

Please add band bio, photos and social links to your Spotify page, cos it looks abandoned.

FB being the pro pusher that it is, made organic reach went to shitz in 2018. Now you need to pay for ads on FB to get the proper coverage.

The ads are great if you have the money. But if you’re using ads just to promote a song, album, video or event then it’s a bit inefficient use of your budget. FB still keeps your audience to itself so that you would have to pay again and again.

Instead, you need to start building your own fan base outside FB in order to communicate with your people directly. One way is to build an email list. Many ways on how to do it. One is to set up a Download Gate. It’s actually a part of a whole marketing campaign, but anyways...

“Download gates let you share downloads of your music in return for fan email addresses, likes, reposts, comments and followers on SoundCloud, Spotify, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and MixCloud”- Hypeddit.
Email address is what matters here. Basically, you give something for free in exchange for emails.

It’s a quote from Hypeddit, but you don’t need to use or pay for it. MailerLite or MailChimp already has this feature and is an email automation service in itself. So you need to use FB ads in a combo with download gates.

That’s it for now. I’ll write more on this in future posts, mate.
Like and share this post.

Amazon and the streaming war

I’ve checked a couple of dozen of indie bands on Chartmetric and I see that most of them didn’t upload their stuff to Amazon music.

Amazon Music is expanding like a mofo. According to them, they passed 55 million subscribers. Most probably a lie, but still Amazon is a serious streaming competitor to Spotify and Apple. There’s also YouTube, but I’ll talk about it later.

Spotify is slowly focusing more on podcasts because they can put ads inside and avoid paying royalties to record labels and musicians. Later Spotify will introduce ads for musicians in way FB did and will probably increase the price of a subscription for all users when it captures all planned territories.

Upload your music to all platforms while there’s still organic reach and there’s a clear streaming battle going on between the corps.

Spotify, again.
(hangover edition)

Spotify is testing a Stories feature. Notable influencers will have an ability to conduct Q and A with fans and post stories.

-- first impression --

Spotify says it will make it easier to find new music, i.e. (my guess) the curators with help from the fans will make better playlists.
At the same time Podcasts are getting more spotlight at Spotify corp.

In the end, there will be some kind of mix of music and podcats which people knew for years as radio. And each influencer becomes a mini radio station as we have now with online radio. And we gonna have shitloads of gatekeepers.

We already have a problematic situation with all the playlist services, curators, fake streams etc.

Later the problem will become bigger and the only way to get noticed on Spotify platform will be to buy ads.

Provide a freemium service. Get everyone hooked. Raise the price. Make them buy ads. FB all over again.

And then Disney buys Spotify.

#Spotify Soft Update

After the recent desktop update, we can’t see the monthly listeners of the Playlists. Monthly listeners feature was more important than a followers count. I knew playlists with 500 followers, but 20 monthly listeners.

My Playlist looks cooler though.
#Spotify codes
It’s a QR code.

You can create a code for any song, album, playlist, user by going to this website. https://www.spotifycodes.com/

The only practical use I can think of is to print stickers with a code to your album, with scan instructions, and your logo. For example, how I did it.

In Spotify:
Open Spotify app
Tap to "Search"
Tap to search bar
Tap to camera icon (allow Spotify to use your camera)
Capture QR Code
Try it below, if you're on desktop Telegram, of course.

Yes, I know that you know. But if you don’t want to be in front of the camera for the YouTube series, you can use that high-quality audio gear that you have and still do a series, but just audio... and video and upload to YouTube.

Same principles apply.

It’s not easy, but I’m sure that your colleagues are not doing that so you have a head start.

Oh shit, here it comes. Pay-for-play. Spotify calls it Marquee.

Works like a digital ad. The user clicks the ad and the label has to pay 55 cents. Spotify advises to spend at least 5k $ on a campaign which "should bring in more than 9,000 potential listeners over a seven-day period. "

Obviously, not for indies.

Forget about any revenue from Spotify. Use the platform as a promotion tool like bandcamp. Update your Spotify about section, add links to your website and social media pages, submit your tour schedule via songkick while it's still possible. And start building your email list.

Don't forget that you can add a one-click "follow" button to your website.

I just saw an article "Here are 6 Marketing Strategies to Get You Featured on Playlists"

But first FOLLOW MY PLAYLIST !

If you read my blog, you should already know all this:
- Engage with fans and other artists
- Promote your content.
- Reach out to blogs and publications
- Get Verified / Spotify
- Get more followers / Spotify
- Make your own playlists / Spotify

But I can tell you how I choose songs for my playlist and it's brütal.
1. I look for a specific kind of tempo, energy and sound. Retro Rock, Hard Rock and Rock'n'Roll.
2. "the journey":
four ways to explore on spotify to find a new artist:
a. fans also like - most often
b. other playlists - second often
c. radio based on an playlist - sometimes
d. radio based on an artist - sometimes
3. So I pick an artist and start the journey

4.
a. I need the first 1-5 sec to decide if the song fits, cos tempo, energy and sound are already there.
b. long intro, guitar bzz, drum count - skip
c. "one two three four" - skip
d. high pitched guitar sound - skip unless smth is different. my ears are too sensitive to high pitch sound
e. boring sound - skip
f. song longer than 5:30 - skip. not even listen to it
g. if i feel that a band in general is good, i give a better listen to all the songs and all above is ignored.

Usually i need 40 sec - 1 min to go through all the songs of an artist.

4. I listen to all the tracks until i find either a perfect song or a couple of candidates. Just need one song, cos one song per artist.
5. the songs go to a hidden playlist
6. in the hidden playlist i listen to them one more time
7. add them to FIRE DEATH CULT
8. listen to it, cos i actually make the playlist for myself
9. if after a while, i feel the song doesn't fit the atmosphere i delete it.
10. when the song quantity of the playlist reaches 100, i will be adding new artists and removing "famous" artists and putting them in another playlist called ETERNAL COSMIC WARRIORS TEMPLE
